Big Smiles in Scott County

Scott County Schools has formed a partnership with Big Smiles Dental to provide dental care at school.  The mobile dentist will visit schools in Scott County twice this year to provide preventative services including cleanings, x-rays, and sealants.  If needed, restorative services like fillings are also available.

The goal of the partnership is to ensure good oral health for all students.  Studies show that students with dental disease miss more than two days of school each year, on average.  According to Big Smiles Dental, this accounts for 51 million school hours lost due to poor dental care.  SCS and Big Smiles hope to remedy this preventable childhood illness.

The program kicked off at Southern Elementary School this week.  In total, dentists evaluated 76 students applying 89 sealants and performing 79 restorative services.  Scott County Family Resource Center Coordinator Torie Hundley estimates that this could save about 160 school days based on the averages noted above.  This initiative will have a significant impact on academic achievement for students.

“We had a huge response to this program,” Hundley commented.  “We are so excited to bring this service to our district to meet student needs.”  The mobile dentist will return to Southern in September to see 50 more students.

As the mobile dentist’s office rolls through Scott County, parents at each participating school will receive a notification and permission form to request services.  Contact the Family Resource or Youth Service Center at your child’s school to learn more.
