SCS Inclement Weather Plan

Northern Snow

Dear Scott County School Community,

By being proactive and having an inclement weather plan in place, we can ensure student safety and approach the winter season with confidence.  The decision to cancel or dismiss school early during inclement weather is a difficult one.  As with any decision, student safety will continue to be our top priority.  Please take some time to familiarize yourself with our procedures and communication plan.

Most days the process begins at 3:00 am with district personnel traveling roads to check on conditions.  During this time, district officials are in contact with law enforcement agencies, weather stations, and other area superintendents and transportation directors.  We strive to make our decision no later than 5:00 am in order to inform parents, students, and employees in a timely manner.  It is important for parents to continue checking local news sources after the initial announcement in the event weather conditions dictate a change.

What factors go in to making the decision to close school?

  • Weather forecasts and anticipated impact on traffic
  • Time when snow, ice, or freezing rain is expected to start and end
  • Weather conditions expected after the snow, ice, or freezing rain
  • Assessments from multiple local and state law enforcement agencies
  • School district's assessment of school parking lot safety and accessibility of buildings

What is NTI and how will parents know?

Beginning this year, Scott County Schools will offer Non-Traditional Instruction (NTI) days.  NTI days count as instruction days and may not have to be made up at the end of the school year if students and staff complete assigned work at home.

Listed below are some important points to remember for NTI days in Scott County:

  • Not all snow days will be NTI days.
  • Students will NOT attend school on a NTI day.  All students will have assigned work to complete at home on these days.  Schools have communicated their respective NTI plans.
  • Visit the NTI day link at http://www.scott.kyschools.us/News/nti to find out specific information about NTI days for your school.

When the decision to use a NTI day is made, Scott County Schools will notify local news channels, post the information on the Scott County Schools website, and send out a district e-communication message.  Instead of Scott County Schools-Closed you will see Scott County Schools-Closed (NTI Day)

What happens if the weather becomes severe during the school day?

Every effort is made to keep students in school through regular dismissal; however, it may become necessary to dismiss students earlier than normal to ensure their safe transport.  School officials monitor weather conditions throughout the day in consultation with local weather officials, the Kentucky Department of Transportation, and various law enforcement agencies.

How can parents be ready?

Parents should always be prepared for school cancellation or early dismissal by having an identified procedure for their child to follow in these situations.  Find out about school cancellation, early dismissal, and NTI days from the following local news sources:
