Welcome! My name is Amy Vinson and I am one of the speech-language pathologists (SLP) at Southern Elementary. I received my masters degree in Communication Disorders from Marshall University and have been a practicing speech therapist for 18 years. As an SLP, I work with students that have:
  • difficulty pronouncing sounds correctly
  • delayed language skills
  • difficulty speaking fluently (stuttering)
  • voice problems (ex., hoarseness due to nodules)
  • hearing impairments that result in speech or language delays; I also complete routine hearing screenings
Overall, my role is to improve communication skills, so that all students can learn in the classroom.

Since I share my responsibilities with another SLP, I typically work with second through fifth graders, as well as with the students in the highly structured classroom.

Sounds Abound!

Many students enrolled in speech therapy are working on producing specific speech sounds, which is sometimes referred to as articulation.

Articulation therapy is done step by step, working from very easy tasks up to more difficult ones. For example, we typically start out practicing a sound just by itself ( "errr") and then move to syllables ("rah, ree, ray") and then to single words ("rat, read, rain"). From there, we will practice the words in short phrases ("a big rat"), in sentences (" I saw a big rat."), and then reading aloud (when age appropriate). The final step is learning to use the sound when speaking in conversation.

Repeated practice of the target sound is necessary, much like you have to practice free throws or a tennins serve many times in order to become skilled at it. It is very helpful for students to practice their speech sounds at home. Here are some links to fun websites that have lots of games for extra practice.
