What is our purpose?

To offer students a wide variety of activity options through skill building and active participation so that each child will have the tools to become and stay physically active and healthy throughout their life.

At Western, we strive to provide opportunities for students to develop basic skills in a variety of team and individual sports.  If students feel comfortable and confident in their skills, they are more likely to become involved in these activities outside of school.  Examples of some of our sport units include:  tennis, badminton, golf, volleyball, track and field, basketball, softball/baseball, soccer, flag football, gymnastics, and dance.  We generally spend about 3-4 class periods on each unit, focusing on skill first and then moving into game situations and strategy.  In addition to sport skills, we also explore a number of movement progressions using locomotor and non-locomotor skills, hula hoops, jump ropes, and many other cooperative and tag type games that gives students other activity options outside the realm of traditional sports.  While learning about physical activity and the importance of exercise, students will also be gaining valuable information to keep their bodies healthy now and in the future.  Topics such as nutrition, the FITT principle, body systems, and healthy choices (with regard to alcohol, tobacco, and drugs) will also be covered.  If you have any questions or concerns about what your student is learning, please contact me!
